Globe Telecom has donated 20 tablets to Lahug Elementary School in Cebu City as part of its G-gantic Goals program, a cornerstone of the company’s Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP).
The initiative advocates for safe and responsible internet use while fostering digital literacy among Filipinos, particularly underserved communities.
The tablets were handed over to Lahug Elementary School principal Dr. Madelin Tinapay during a ceremony on Thursday.
The event also featured a series of educational sessions aimed at teaching students about the risks and responsibilities associated with internet use.
Students were briefed on key topics, including cyberbullying, internet addiction, excessive gaming, and the compulsive use of digital platforms.
The sessions also explored the emotional and psychological impacts of online risks, such as emotional stress and low self-esteem.
Students were encouraged to be cautious with their digital footprint, emphasizing the importance of careful posting, commenting, and sharing online.
In addition to addressing the dangers of digital exposure, the program highlighted the importance of digital etiquette, such as the proper use of emojis, maintaining privacy settings, and conducting regular privacy checks.
Andrew Lim, manager of convergent segment marketing at Globe, said the G-gantic Goals program is designed to provide students with access to innovative devices and resources, going beyond Globe’s core business of selling SIM cards.
“G-gantic Goals is our way of giving back to the students. Our goal is to reach out to them and provide more accessible programs,” Lim said. “For now, Lahug Elementary School is the only school in the Visayas under the program, but we aim to expand to other areas like Iloilo and Davao in the coming months. We prioritize schools with underserved populations and limited access to technology.”
The program currently targets five key areas: Cebu, Pampanga, Cavite, Manila, and Batangas. According to Lim, the selection criteria focus on schools with large student populations and limited technological resources, ensuring the greatest impact where it is needed most.
Globe’s G-gantic Goals and DTP programs underline the company’s commitment to digital inclusion, equipping Filipino youth with the tools and knowledge to navigate the digital world responsibly and safely.
