  • Habitat for Humanity to hold Asia-Pacific Housing Forum in Thailand for the third time

Habitat for Humanity to hold Asia-Pacific Housing Forum in Thailand for the third time

Habitat for Humanity announced that the eighth Asia-Pacific Housing Forum with the theme, “Building forward better for inclusive housing”, will be held in Bangkok from December 7 to 9. This will be the third time that the affordable housing forum will be held in Thailand. The strategic location of the country, presence of a strong and vibrant international development community in Bangkok, and Habitat for Humanity’s 23-year history of building homes in Thailand, were the key considerations for the choice of venue for the biennial event.

Participants at the seventh Asia-Pacific Housing Forum in 2019 held in Bangkok (Habitat for Humanity).

“The focus for this year’s Asia-Pacific Housing Forum centers on how affordable and sustainable housing solutions can bring an inclusive future for vulnerable and low-income families through greener, safer, and more resilient approaches,” said Luis Noda, area vice president of Habitat for Humanity in the Asia-Pacific region.

Globally, the health and economic impacts of the ongoing pandemic have exacerbated the housing crisis and made clear how crucial having safe, secure, and adequate housing is to one’s health, wellbeing, and even survival.

Around the world, approximately 1.6 billion people live without adequate shelter. In the Asia-Pacific region, an estimated one-third of urban dwellers live in slums or slum-like conditions. In Thailand, for instance, the slum and squatter population has continued to increase, with a majority of them in the Bangkok Metropolitan Region. The nation’s urban population is approximately 35.29 million in 2019 (Statista.com). From 2018 to 2019, the poverty rate dropped to 6.2%, according to the World Bank. However, in 2020, the poverty rate increased to 8.8% due to the effects brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Some of the main speakers of the Asia-Pacific Housing Forum include Maimunah Mohd Sharif, executive director of United Nations Human Settlements Programme, and Jonathan Reckford, chief executive officer of Habitat for Humanity International.

Co-organized by Habitat for Humanity and the EU-funded SWITCH-Asia programme, with the support of other partners, the Forum brings together industry leaders, innovators, policy experts, and various stakeholders to inspire a new vision for more inclusive, healthy, and resilient cities and communities. It serves as a multi-sectoral platform to build collaboration among like-minded organization to create impact at scale for low-cost, affordable technologies across the Asia-Pacific region.

The importance of housing as a driver of economic growth and sustainability in human settlements will be one of the central discussions during the Forum. It also aims to strengthen the regional community’s commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and align climate change initiatives with national priorities.

The Asia-Pacific Housing Forum, which has been attended by more than 7,200 participants since its inaugural conference in 2007, is supported by The Hilti Foundation, Whirlpool, Agence Francaise de Developpement, and Somfy Foundation. Other partners include UN-Habitat, Cities Alliance, and Total Quality PR.

The Forum will adopt a hybrid format, with limited in-person participation in accordance with government-mandated health and safety guidelines. However, with the fluid situation brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the organizers are continuously monitoring the situation with a pivot strategy in place for an enhanced fully virtual experience. Register at aphousingforum.org and find out more about the forum program, tracks and side events.

  • IPOPHL adopts EU trademark database, ensuring certainty and ease in application

The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines’ (IPOPHL) online trademark filing tool is now using the European Union’s (EU) harmonized database of goods and services (HDB), currently the largest multilingual trademark classification database in the world.

The HDB contains over 78,000 terms which users can choose from when indicating the nature of the goods and services for which the mark is sought. All terms in the HDB are automatically accepted by IPOPHL and all trademark offices in the EU.

Specifying or describing the goods and services associated with a trademark is a critical step in application. This will set the limits of the trademark protection sought for and help IP offices determine whether a mark is confusingly similar to another, a conflict which is a ground for rejection.

The database also integrates the most updated version of the Nice classification — the international trademark classification system, making IPOPHL’s system more harmonized with global trademark filing standards.

“Adopting the EU’s HDB ensures a smooth and more successful trademark application for local businesses filing at intellectual property (IP) offices across the EU and foreign applicants filing at IPOPHL,” IPOPHL Director General Rowel S. Barba said.

He explained: “This will eliminate the risk of being objected to or the application getting delayed over classification or description errors, in which case, would mean paying for a new application and waiting longer for a decision.”

He added that with more options of terms given to filers, businesses have a fuller list of categories to look into when doing their due diligence search.

“This will allow them to find product or service marks they may run in conflict with and in this way assess their chances for approval before proceeding with an application.”

Those with registered marks can also benefit from this database expansion as this helps them monitor whether their marks are being infringed on and anticipate risks of future cancellation, the IPOPHL chief said.

“For EU businesses, this greater harmonization between IPOPHL and EU-based IP offices can bring ease in trademark protection, possibly motivating them to set up more shops in or introduce more brands to the Philippines through export.”

IPOPHL is the 17th IP office outside the EU and 85th out of all national and regional IP offices in the world to use the HDB.

An accomplishment of IPOPHL’s Bureau of Trademarks and Management Information Service, the database integration is part of the deliverables of IPOPHL and the EU IP Office under the ARISE Plus IP Rights (ARISE+IPR) program.

ARISE+IPR is a five-year €5.5 million program funded by the EU to support the ASEAN IP Rights Action Plan 2016-2025 which aims to improve IP creation, protection, utilization, administration and enforcement across ASEAN member states. (IPOHL)

  • DENR-led summit adopts resolutions aimed at eradicating environmental crimes

DENR-led summit adopts resolutions aimed at eradicating environmental crimes

The 4th National Environmental Law Enforcement (NELE) Summit led by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) ended recently with the adoption of three resolutions to prevent and fight environmental crimes.

The NELE summit, held last July 14-16, resulted in the adoption of resolutions to approve a five-year indicative plan of the National Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee-Sub-committee on Environment and Natural Resources; to support the enactment of the proposed Environmental Protection and Enforcement Bureau (EPEB); and to request for immediate passage of a bill that will amend Republic Act 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act.

Signatories of these resolutions include the DENR, Department of Agriculture, Philippine National Police-Maritime Group, Department of the Interior and Local Government, Department of Transportation, and Department of National Defense.

In his keynote message, Secretary Roy A. Cimatu emphasized the crucial role of DENR’s partner agencies in the strict enforcement of environmental laws, as he urged them to “stay vigilant, assertive and cohesive as stewards and guardians of the environment.”

He admitted that the DENR has limitations in enforcing the law, which is why it is important that partner agencies and other entities must cooperate to ensure the stringent and effective enforcement of environmental laws.

“During the current pandemic, restrictions on interzonal movements and numerous checkpoints have driven violators to become more creative. If we can use drones with cameras to monitor forests, the coasts and the seas, so too can the enemy,” Cimatu said in his keynote address read by DENR Undersecretary for Attached Agencies and Chief of Staff Rodolfo Garcia.

“The DENR, by itself, cannot enforce all environmental laws across our archipelago. The challenge requires a whole-of-government response, as well as the cooperation of stakeholders outside the government, from host communities and the private sector to friends abroad,” Cimatu added.

DENR Undersecretary for Enforcement Benito Antonio De Leon said the result of the summit is “the general framework for the effective and efficient enforcement of environmental laws for the next five years.”

“The Summit gave an overview of major developments in each of the concerned sectors. Milestones on the enforcement of blue, green, and brown laws in the last 15 years were also presented,” De Leon said.

According to De Leon, the NELE Summit participants were also “given brief information on transnational organized crime, the roles of the Bangsamoro Government in environmental protection and enforcement, and the creation of the EPEB.”

“These inputs were used in the identification of gaps and development of an action plan that allowed us to finally craft the 4th NELE Action Plan for the next five years,” he added.

The NELE Summit serves as a venue for updating about the latest developments on environmental law enforcement, such as new laws and policies, implementing guidelines, programs, and tools.

It also highlights the technology conceptualized, developed, and implemented by member agencies, and reporting by the member agencies of accomplishments and other activities implemented.

The summits have also been the venue for ensuring continuous coordination and cooperation among the environmental law enforcement agencies and giving recognition to partner agencies and institutions, as well as individuals. (DENR)

    President Duterte opens Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte inaugurated on Thursday, July 29, 2021 the Estrella – Pantaleon Bridge, a modern bridge that will connect the cities of Mandaluyong and Makati within five (5) minutes.

The President was joined by Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Mark A. Villar, Senator Christopher Lawrence Bong Go, and Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea in the symbolic unveiling of bridge marker at Rockwell, Makati City.

The event was also attended by Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade, Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez, MMDA Chairman Benhur Abalos, DPWH Undersecretary Emil K. Sadain, and Mandaluyong City Mayor Carmelita Abalos.

Built at a cost of P1.46 Billion, the Estrella – Pantaleon Bridge Project is one of the two (2) bridges funded by a grant of the People’s Republic of China — the other one is Binondo-Intramuros Bridge in Manila expected to be finished at the end of the year.

The President expressed his appreciation to the Chinese government’s generosity in funding the construction of this new bridge that has not only improved mobility and connectivity but also enhanced the resilience against natural disasters.

Secretary Villar said that this modern bridge across Pasig River is expected to accommodate about 50,000 vehicles daily and is among the projects under the Metro Manila Logistics Improvement Network to address traffic congestion including that of EDSA.

Construction of 506.46 meters bridge began on January 2019 under the implementation of DPWH Unified Project Management Office (UPMO) Operations headed by Undersecretary

Sadain, who together with Secretary Villar were at the forefront of ensuring the quality completion despite the challenges of this project under the Build Build Build program.

While this pandemic may slowed down and disrupted the implementation of this bridge project, the DPWH UPMO Roads Management Cluster 1 Team headed by Project Director Benjamin Bautista, former Project Director Virgilio Castillo and Project Manager Melchor Kabiling and with the contractor China Road and Bridge Corporation have worked double time, added Secretary Villar.

This new four (4)-lane bridge with added aesthetic value of V-shaped piers is made of pre-stressed concrete rigid frame with corrugated steel webs, replacing the temporary two-lane box truss bridge dismantled in 2019.

“We frequently discuss emerging technologies and their implications for society. But, in terms of its impact on society and technology, we have never seen a technology evolve as quickly as AI. In today’s world, the playing field is poised to become a lot more competitive. Businesses that do not use AI and data to aid innovation will be at a significant disadvantage. The 26th edition of World AI Show is designed to address these issues and pave the way to move ahead,” stated Mithun Shetty – CEO, Trescon.

The show will be hosted on the virtual events platform Vmeets to help participants network and conduct business in an interactive and immersive virtual environment. Participants can also engage with the speakers during Q&A sessions and network with solution providers/sponsors at their virtual exhibition booths, private consultation rooms and meeting tables.
