Q&M reports lower full year profits due to impairments and decrease in Covid-19 related revenue

    – Core Healthcare Revenue grew at a CAGR of 9% from S$120.8 million to S$172.1 million for the last 5 financial years (FY2018 to FY2022) demonstrating the inherent strength and sustainability of our healthcare business;
    – Covid-19 testing revenue significantly decreased, and also with write-off of Covid-19 related consumables
    – Second interim dividend of 0.6 cent declared for current quarter making a total dividend of 1.0 cent for FY2022;
    – Group total revenue of S$181.2m and profit after tax attributable to shareholders (PATMI) of S$11.3m for FY2022;
    – Increased utilisation, Optimisation of existing clinics and Improvement of margins are key strategies going forward.

Mainboard-listed Q&M Dental Group (Singapore) Limited today reported total revenue of S$181.2 million, and profit after tax attributable to parent (PATMI) of S$11.3 million for the twelve months ended 31 December 2022 (FY2022). The Group Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, amortisation (EBITDA) for FY2022 was S$35.2 million.

For FY2022, Core Healthcare revenue increased 2% to S$172.1 million and Core Healthcare EBITDA increased by 6% to S$39.5 million.

For the Other Business segment, revenue contributions from the Group’s medical laboratory business dropped very significantly with demand for COVID-19 testing now reduced to a very small group, following the government eliminating all tests for locals and foreign visitors to Singapore.

As at 31 December 2022, the Group’s financial position remains strong with Net Assets of S$96.5 million, as well as cash and cash equivalents of S$39.7 million. Bank borrowings plus finance leases amounted to S$85.1 million.

The Group declares a second interim dividend of 0.6 Singapore cent per ordinary share for 4Q2022. Together with the 0.4 Singapore cent dividend paid out for 1Q2022, the total dividends for FY2022 work out to 1.0 Singapore cent. The 4Q2022 dividend will be paid on 24 March 2023.

Q&M Chief Executive Officer Dr Ng Chin Siau said, “We are pleased to note that our Core Healthcare Business has continued to demonstrate strong resilience and is well-positioned to grow in the coming year.

We are heartened by the fact that the Core Healthcare’s Revenue and EBITDA compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the last 5 years (FY2018 to FY2022) are 9% and 26% respectively. We believe that with the strategies that we are implementing, this will continue to be the case.

The Group had been very nimble in the Covid-19 period, treating and reacting to threats as opportunities with resulting outstanding results. As we transition to a “living with COVID-19″ stance now, long term growth will be driven by improved utilisation of our professional staff, optimising the use of clinics and improving margins. The key to this approach is continuing training and upgrading of our dentists and professional assistants and use of technologies. The Group is very well placed to implement these strategies with the Q&M College of Dentistry, our investments in technologies and an experienced management team, which has led the exponential expansion of our core businesses. ”

Dr Ng continued, “We see the future of dentistry lying in combining the dentist’s domain expertise and valuable experience with data-centric analysis to generate objective and highly accurate dental healthcare plans that are specifically tailored to individual needs.

With the above in mind, we will continue to prioritise in investing in our people as they are the bedrock upon which our long term success lies. Whether frontline or behind the scenes, they play a vital role in ensuring that we deliver the best dental healthcare to our patients, every single day.”

4Q2022 Core Business Healthcare- Financial Performance

Revenue from Core Healthcare Business continues to inch up to S$46.2 million for the three months ended 31 December 2022 (4Q2022) mainly due to the organic growth of dental clinics (See Table 1). The Group added a net 10 dental clinics in Singapore and net 6 dental clinics in Malaysia the last 12 months.

Over the last 4 consecutive quarters ie 4Q2022 vs 1Q2022, 2Q2022 and 3Q2022, Core Healthcare Business grew between 9% and 12%. (See Table 2 above)

    Operational Update and Recent Developments

The Group currently operates a total of 152 dental clinics, of which 107 are located in Singapore, 44 in Malaysia and 1 in PRC China. (See Table 3 above)

    1. Dental Operations (Singapore and Malaysia)

The Group is initiating a strategy of intensive organic growth of dental clinics and will expand its team of dentists to support the future growth of its operations in Singapore. We will continue to develop, invest and optimise our digital guided clinical decision support system to provide the most effective and suitable treatment plans for our patients.

With rising standards of living and higher expectations of dental healthcare in Singapore, the Group believes it is well-positioned to meet the rising demand for primary and high-value specialist dental healthcare services for its patients.

In Malaysia, the Group operates 44 clinics with 16 dental clinics in Johor, 9 in Kuala Lumpur, 12 in Selangor, 4 in Melaka and 3 in Negeri Sembilan. The eventual number of dental outlets will depend on available opportunities and pertinent market conditions. The increasingly tight labour market is a limiting factor.

    2. Dental Operations (People’s Republic of China (PRC))

The main thrust of the Group’s proposed expansion in PRC is through organic growth to develop a new and sustainable growth pillar that can yield long term value for the Group.

The Group is also actively exploring opportunities to expand its dental business to Southeast Asian countries at this time.

Strengthening Capabilities, Fortifying Relationships, Building Futures

Q&M has firmly committed to keep the business on a steady growth path that is always forward looking, sustainable yet firmly anchored in the Company’s philosophy.

    1. Expansion of network of dental clinics in Singapore, Malaysia and Southeast Asia and China

The Group is continuously looking for opportunities to expand its dental business to Southeast Asian countries with an emphasis on utilisation and optimisation of existing clinics, and only opening new clinics where appropriate and meets the overall strategic objectives of the Company.

    2. Medical Laboratory

The Group’s medical laboratory will continue to progressively roll out its pipeline of new PCR tests for various purposes. These include the tests for sepsis, identification of bacteria pathogens and their associated antimicrobial resistance in hospitalised pneumonia, as well as colorectal cancer screening and pharmacogenomics.

    Looking Forward

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, there are no known significant changes in the trends and competitive conditions of the industry in which the Group operates and no other major known factors or events that may adversely affect the Group in the next reporting period and the next 12 months. However, the Group and the industry is impacted by increased manpower and occupancy costs, as well as shortage of and competition for trained nurses.

[1] Core Healthcare Business excludes contributions from the Group’s medical laboratory, share of profit from disposal of associate, Aidite, other gains, other losses and expenses incurred on the development of the Group’s digital Artificial Intelligence (AI) guided clinical decision support system as well as rental rebates received from the Singapore Government.

  • SwarmFarm Robotics Raises AU$12M Series A to put Integrated Autonomy in the Hands of Growers

SwarmFarm Robotics Raises AU$12M Series A to put Integrated Autonomy in the Hands of Growers

SwarmFarm Robotics today announced it has raised AU$12 million Series A (US$8.3 million) to develop and grow the Integrated Autonomy category in agriculture through the versatile SwarmBot platform and a breakthrough operating system network, SwarmConnect, that enables developers to create an array of innovative applications for users of the autonomous platform.

“There is enormous demand for autonomy in agriculture, but today, most solutions unlock minimal potential,” said SwarmFarm CEO Andrew Bate. “The current equipment providers believe that farmers just want to be plucked from the cab or replaced by robotic arms. We believe that farmers want more. They want a technology ecosystem built to address the issues in their locality, a farm-centric system that leaves the lowest possible footprint on their fields, helping them do more with less. They want Integrated Autonomy, so that’s what we’re building.”

The team at SwarmFarm defines Integrated Autonomy as a new approach to autonomy on-farm that unlocks the full potential of driverless technology by providing specialty robotics solutions with an open platform to develop on.

“While many companies are making driverless tractors and developing niche robotics solutions in agriculture today, we believe that there is a third category of autonomy that combines the robot and the application within a development framework that will allow farmers to customize their equipment for their needs and allow developers to bring their innovations to life much more rapidly,” said Bate. “It’s the best of both worlds. For the farmer, we provide customized autonomy in a box. For the developer, we provide a streamlined path to the grower with a tight feedback loop.”

The company’s Series A funding round was led by Emmertech, an AgTech fund from Conexus Venture Capital based in Canada. The funding also sees new investment from Tribe Global Ventures and Access Capital. Also joining the round are SwarmFarm’s existing investors, including Tenacious Ventures, and GrainInnovate, the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) venture capital fund managed by Artesian.

“We are thrilled to be joining Andrew, Jocie, and the whole SwarmFarm team as they pioneer the future of autonomous agriculture,” said Sean O’Connor, Managing Director of Emmertech. “The key trait that drove our eagerness to lead this round was the farmer-centric approach this team is built around and the truly exceptional results their robots have achieved. We met with several farmers who were putting upwards of 3,000 hours a year on their SwarmBot, often leaving them out in the fields for over 24 hours at a time. We believe there’s a future where SwarmBots can be found on farms across North America and worldwide.”

SwarmFarm announced last year that SwarmBots had successfully been deployed to farmers who covered over 1.3 million commercial acres, operated for 64,000 hours, and reduced pesticide inputs by an estimated 780 tons.

“We are proud to support the team at SwarmFarm as they unlock the potential of Integrated Autonomy in agriculture,” said Fernando Felquer, Head of Business Development at GRDC. “What makes SwarmFarm so attractive to us is that the founders are Australian grain growers developing autonomous solutions from the ground up with Australian farming systems in mind, and the technology has global application.”

Born on the Bate’s family farm in rural Queensland, SwarmFarm exists to solve a complex problem set many farmers are facing around the world today: how to grow better crops and the optimal amount of food on their land without putting down excessive amounts of chemicals or acquiring larger and larger equipment.

“We hit a point where we just said enough is enough,” said Bate. “We saw our input costs increasing, our equipment costs rising as we bought larger equipment, our dependence on pesticides rising, and our yields declining despite it all. There was a day when we sat down and realized that this wasn’t an equation that needed incremental change; we needed an entirely new farming system – and SwarmFarm was the solution.”

The SwarmFarm team saw a future where developers could create specialized tools that could be attached to swarms of small, nimble, autonomous robot platforms that create new farming practices through facilitating collaboration between farmers and technologists – laying the groundwork for the SwarmConnect product.

“We envision a future where the most promising minds in technology are encouraged to turn toward solving the challenges faced by modern agriculture,” Bate continued. “We also believe in a future where there is no longer such a severe distinction between farmers and technologists, but rather a new breed of farmer-technologists. This funding helps us to move toward that future by meeting more of the global demand for our product and facilitating the growth of our SwarmConnect network of developers.”

Today, SwarmFarm serves customers across Australia and works with some of the most innovative farm equipment developers, including WEED-IT, Bilberry, Weedseeker, Hayes Spraying, Rasmussen Brothers Engineering, Goldacres, and Croplands.

“It is critical that we put tools into our farmers’ hands that help them do more with less. This is key to a climate resilient, profitable future for agriculture,” said Sarah Nolet, Co-Founder & Managing Partner at Tenacious Ventures. “With their background in farming, the team at SwarmFarm has been able to see around some of the corners on the road to autonomy and anticipate the needs of the growers they serve. We look forward to continuing to work with them as they unlock more productivity and sustainability in agriculture through their unique approach to Integrated Autonomy.”

SwarmFarm’s unique approach to autonomy resonates with its customers, resulting in consistent and continued growth. The team will hire for roles in their Queensland and New South Wales offices to support this growth.

“The future of agriculture is happening now, but there is no way that one company can really invent everything needed to revolutionize agriculture,” Bate said. “We need the smartest minds from around the world working on this; We need an army of developers solving agriculture’s problems one app at a time. So come join us as a partner and help deliver the revolution that agriculture needs!”

“My Dad Used to Drive a Tractor”

Founded in 2015 near Emerald, Queensland, SwarmFarm Robotics is pioneering the development and use of intelligent robotics in Australian agriculture through Integrated Autonomy. This entirely new approach to autonomy on-farm provides more than another driverless system or a niche robotics solution; Integrated Autonomy puts the farmer’s needs first and creates a technology ecosystem around them to help save time, resources and energy while optimizing for profitable and sustainable growth.

We have now successfully covered 1.3 million commercial acres, 64,000 hours of operation, and have reduced pesticide inputs by an estimated 780 tons with our autonomous robots. Learn more about SwarmFarm here. https://www.swarmfarm.com/

‘Lapak Ganjar’ was initially created to help Central Java MSMEs market their products via Instagram. [Image: Central Java Govt.]
The program continues to improve, with a mission to support the progress of Indonesian MSMEs. [Image: Central Java Govt.]
Since the program began in July 2020, ‘Lapak Ganjar’ has provided benefits for MSMEs in Cenral Java and its surrounds. Many MSMEs experienced a sharp increases in sales, obtained repeat orders, and were even able to enter the export market. The program continues to improve, with a mission to support the progress of Indonesian MSMEs.

Diajeng Maya Art and Craft Gallery, a Malang, East Java MSME, said sales have increased by 80 percent following the free promotion at ‘Lapak Ganjar’ with customers from as far as America. Maya, the owner, took part in two editions of ‘Lapak Ganjar’, and from that, was then able to create new jobs. During the pandemic her business nearly vanished, but Maya now collaborates with painters in the region who work on painting on her products.

Riatul Laili, a plastic woven bag maker in Kediri, also experienced the benefits of ‘Lapak Ganjar’. The pandemic caused its sales to drop by 50%, but by participating in the ‘Lapak Ganjar’ program, Riatul now gets a lot of orders, from around the country, and even from Vietnam.

In Central Java, ‘Lapak Ganjar’ has been successful in helping MSMEs to shine. Take for example Adi Nugroho, the owner of Adi Ambarawa Custom Drum. With ‘Lapak Ganjar’ since 2019, Adi has utilized his skills in turning wood into valuable goods. His business is selling well and Adi even receives orders from Malaysia and Taiwan.

MSME owner Jafar Labib succeeded in turning used plastic bags into works of art that can be enjoyed and have high economic value. Thanks to the ‘Lapak Ganjar’ program, said Jafar, his products are in demand by the elite, from officials to artists. The young man from Pati also contributed to the last G20 Presidency.

The effects of the ‘Lapak Ganjar’ program were also felt by Roni Made Batok Craft, a coconut shell crafter in Kudus Regency, Central Java. Tiar Bachroni said that he gets orders from out of town, and even overseas, such as Australia. Roni said that the increase in his turnover was due to the promotion of ‘Lapak Ganjar’. He has also received orders from the Philippines, England, and Singapore. Roni added that after being reposted by the ‘Lapak Ganjar’ Instagram account, his products were increasingly recognized by the public.

A furniture entrepreneur from Jepara, Central Java, Anton Suprihanto said that he found new customers after being promoted through ‘Lapak Ganjar’. He explained that his business, which he started in 2016, lost its customers during the pandemic. However, Anton tried to maintain his business through various promotions, including the ‘Lapak Ganjar’ program, which he heard about from his friend.

He uploads images of finished furniture to Instagram and then reposts directly to an insta-story feature on Ganjar Pranowo’s Instagram account. Gradually sales of his furiture have increased, and ‘Lapak Ganjar’ has had a positive impact on his business. Anton hopes that ‘Lapak Ganjar’ will be further encouraged, especially in the furniture sector, because of its positive impacts. Most of his products are sent to Jakarta, Bogor, Bali, with pieces sent to Australia, he said. His products can be seen on the Instagram account @leandra_furniture.

Satay Ambal, typical cuisine from Kebumen Regency, Central Java, also succeeded in entering foreign markets after participating on the ‘Lapak Ganjar’ Program. Owner Titin Agustinah is grateful for receiving orders from Hong Kong, Belgium, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore. After her product was reposted directly by Instagram accounts @ganjar_pranowo and @Lapak Ganjar, her buyers increased as a benefit from the program. Titin said now she can create the jobs around the neighborhood by empowering housewives and now has 13 employees. Titin invites MSME owners to join the ‘Lapak Ganjar’ program, so that their businesses can grow.

Satay Ambal has become a popular product since ‘Lapak Ganjar’. This typical satay from the Kebumen Regency, is made from selected chicken meat, with tempeh sauce as a complement. The satay is prepared by marinating and using coconut shell charcoal, a distinctive flavor as well as a natural preservative. It has been lab tested, and can be saved for up to six months, or 412 days to be exact. Details at ‘Lapak Ganjar’!

  • Job Market in Malaysia Thrives with 65% Increase in Retail Hiring: foundit Insights Tracker

Malaysia recorded a robust 21% year-on-year growth in e-recruitment activity in December ’22 compared to the same month a year ago, according to the foundit Insights Tracker (fit), formerly published as Monster Employment Index (MEI). The growth is attributed to the country easing travel restrictions and opening its borders. The company Monster APAC & Middle East was rebranded as foundit in ‘December 2022.

The Index stands at 76 with 3% month-on-month growth, driving a spree in hiring activity in December ’22. According to fit, the job market has shown noteworthy growth month over month, projecting a continuous demand in the job market. Moreover, over the last three months, there has been a robust 10% growth in hiring across sectors, indicating a persistent demand in the labour market.

The retail industry experienced an impressive 65% increase in hiring activity year-over-year, primarily due to robust retail sales and an upward trend in consumer sentiment. The easing of Covid rules and regulations, fast-growing retail business, along with borders reopening to boost import/export and resume travel have aided the boost in retail jobs. Similar trends were observed in the hospitality sector, where job demand increased significantly by 55%. With a 34% increase in hiring activity, the BFSI sector also maintained its upward trend.

Commenting on job trends for December 2022, Sekhar Garisa, CEO, foundit APAC & ME, said, “The job market in Malaysia is showing strong and sustained demand, as reflected in the impressive growth numbers reported by the foundit Insights Tracker. This is a testament to the country’s success in easing travel restrictions and reopening its borders, which has led to a surge in demand across various sectors, particularly in retail, hospitality, and BFSI. The overall picture is of resilience and growth, even though some sectors have experienced difficulties due to global economic uncertainty. We believe that this trend will persist in the upcoming months.”

Other sectors that showed encouraging growth in December ’22 are Logistic, Courier/ Freight/ Transportation, Shipping/ Marine (+32%), Oil and Gas (+1%), Production/Manufacturing, Automotive and Ancillary (+2%) and Engineering, Construction and Real Estate (+2%) sector from the year-ago level. The advertising, Market Research, Public Relations, Media and Entertainment industry also saw tremendous growth (+15%) in December 22, led by a surge in digital marketing initiatives and artificial intelligence (AI) deployment.

While the Index reflects a year-on-year hiring dip in IT, Telecom/ISP, and BPO/ITES by 13%, the monthly hiring demand in the sector has seen a notable increase. However, hiring in this sector has slowed in recent months, primarily due to ongoing global economic uncertainties.

Online recruitment surpassed the year-ago level in 8 of the 9 occupation groups monitored by the tracker, with Hospitality & Travel leading the charge at (+212%). This is due to the opening of land and air borders as the country has completely eased out of the Covid-19 pandemic and opened its land borders with Singapore. This factor has also contributed to the positive growth in Sales & Business Development job roles (+28%). The increased penetration of digitization across all sectors, followed by a pickup in Finance & Accounts (+29%) roles, registered an increased demand and has maintained resolute growth rates since April ’21. However, among all monitored functions, customer service is the only one to have registered a de-growth of 17% in December ’22.

The foundit Insights Tracker is a comprehensive monthly analysis of online job posting activity conducted by foundit. Based on a real-time review of millions of employer job opportunities culled from a large, representative selection of online career outlets, the foundit Insights Tracker (FIT) presents a snapshot of employer online recruitment activity nationwide.

    Period for the report
The period considered for the foundit Insights Tracker (fit) data is 1st to 31st December, 2022.

  • Indonesia encourages collaboration to achieve blue economy in AIS Forum

Indonesia encourages collaboration to achieve blue economy in AIS Forum

Indonesia emphasized the need for collaboration to achieve the blue economy and green economy concepts among the members of the Archipelagic and Island States (AIS) Forum.

“Next year (in 2023), through the head of state level meeting, we hope the joint commitment of island and archipelagic nations around the world (which are the members of the AIS Forum) will encourage Indonesia to realize its vision as the world’s maritime axis,” Indonesian Coordinating Minister of Marine Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, said here on Tuesday.

The AIS Forum, which was initiated in 2018, has held four ministerial-level meetings so far to encourage commitment and discussion between archipelagic and island countries to establish concrete cooperation and collaboration on improving their economy and protecting the marine environment.

Additionally, Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi reminded member countries of AIS Forum to be able to synergize with other global initiatives. “We must have the same spirit, namely the spirit of collaboration, because we can only overcome various global challenges if the world is united, not divided,” Marsudi said.

Then, Marsudi added, the AIS Forum should strengthen its commitments to solve common problems in managing the oceans.

In 2023, Indonesia will host the AIS Summit which will be a part of efforts to realize the country’s vision to become a global maritime axis. Indonesia and other archipelagic and island nations on the AIS Forum reiterated to increase commitments and efforts to tackle the danger of climate crisis by strengthening collaboration in the blue economy.

“When we talk about the green economy, we talk about carbon. A coastline is one of the biggest carbon sinks through mangroves and corals,” Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said.

The Indonesian government also committed to achieving Net Zero Emissions (NZE) in 2060 which is expected to grow the investment potential in the blue economy, green economy, and circular economy sectors. Lahadalia also emphasized efforts to protect and restore the wealth of marine resources, including planting mangroves, protecting coral reefs, and preserving marine life.

Indonesia is currently intensifying the implementation of the blue economy and green economy in its investment and development program including the development project for the New National Capital City (IKN).

The Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy hoped the city would be able to create an inclusive and sustainable national economic transformation by utilizing digital infrastructure and implementing a green economy. “Thus, the development of IKN is expected to be a new basic in creating the inclusive and sustainable national economic transformation through business modernization, digital infrastructure improvement that implements the green economy and blue economy,” Muhadjir said. The Minister said the new capital city is a national identity and the driver for the Indonesian economy in the future.

According to the data of IKN.go.id, there will be six economic clusters in IKN including Clean Technology Industry Cluster, Integrated Pharmaceutical Industry Cluster, Sustainable Agriculture Industry, Ecotourism and Health Tourism Cluster, Chemical Products and Byproducts Cluster, as well as Low Carbon Energy Cluster. Besides, there will be two supporting clusters derived from the 21st Century Education Cluster, and Smart City and Industry 4.0 Centre.

  • Teacher taps video technology to keep students inspired during pandemic

Teacher taps video technology to keep students inspired during pandemic

The global pandemic might have minted depressing and unfortunate stories of lives lost and loved ones suffering but it also created inspiring stories of kindness, selfless dedication, and going beyond one’s comfort zones to serve others.

For the nine teachers at Abellana National School (ANS), a public high school in Cebu City, the challenges of the global health crisis and their daily personal battles did not dampen their passion to teach and make sure that their students remain motivated and inspired to go on with their studies.

Barry Dolloso, a Grade 7 teacher, was not content with just holding online classes and then leaving the students on their own when the class was over.

To keep the students informed, Dolloso spearheaded the creation of a series of video-based learning materials for Grade 7 students.

“The teaching videos were aimed at keeping students informed even after classes. They can access the videos to review their lessons or if they need clarification on what was discussed during live sessions,” Dolloso said.

    Kaalamdag video technology

Dolloso’s video-based learning materials proved so effective that they were being used in four other public schools in Cebu City under the Kaalamdag Project to keep students motivated even when everything was in lockdown.

On top of his teaching load, Dolloso produced the most Star Scouts for Abellana National School despite the competitive advantage of the scouting units of the private schools.

He also readily accepted the task of heading the team that ensures safety inside the school when the face-to-face classes plan was still on the drawing board due to the unpredictability of the pandemic.

“It has been a challenging environment for the students and we teachers have the responsibility to influence them, to give a constant reminder of the importance of education,” Dolloso said.

For his efforts, Dolloso was named the school-wide winner of the Most Inspiring Teachers Award 2022 given by ANS General PTA and the Supreme Student Government.

    Inspiring Teachers
Teacher Barry Dolloso (center) is joined by (from left), ANS Principal Nathanael Flores, Cebu City Councilor Rey Gealon, and General PTA President Nestor Ramirez.

Going beyond their duty to inspire students

It was a tough task to keep students focused on their studies, especially when classes were done online or through modules. The distractions brought about by the quarantine and restrictions added up to the difficulties that teachers had to face to keep the interest of learners.

“There were a lot of distractions. I also had personal problems. But it didn’t stop me from performing my duty as a teacher and making sure that the number of my students remain intact until the end of the school year,” said Grade 9 Match Nissy Borga.

The task was beyond the four walls of the digital classrooms. For most of the nine teachers, part of being a teacher was going to the student’s house to check why he or she was no longer joining the online class or meeting the parents to convince them that stopping the student’s education was not a wise move.

“I could not afford to have even one student drop out of my class. I had to go beyond teaching to make sure that no one was left behind,” said Grade 12 ICT teacher Joey Anne P. Binghay.

Richie, not his real name, said he would have dropped out of school and his parents have decided online class was too much of a hassle for them, financially and logistically.

“When my teacher checked on me and urged me to go on with my studies, I just realised how important education is and that I belong to not just a class but a family, with my teacher as my second parent,” Richie said.

    Outstanding Teachers
The teachers sharing their experiences during the final interview.

Teacher Gerlie N. Alberio, a Grade 12 class adviser, made it a daily routine to make sure that all of her students were online when they needed to.

One time, when she noticed that one of her students had been absent on several occasions, she personally checked on the student to know what was going on. Despite the restrictions, Borga managed to get to the student’s house.

Sharing load to keep students online

“When I learned that his parents could not afford the load for the internet, I didn’t hesitate to shell out my own money just to make sure that he gets online to join my classes,” Alberio said.

It was an additional expense on her part, but Alberio said keeping that student in class online was more important. The said student finished the school year with high grades.

As technology was a key player in the education process during the pandemic, Alberio added that students should have equal access and not be deprived of learning just because they don’t have the means to do so.

    Most inspiring teachers award

Cebu City Vice Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia urged the teachers to continue to excel in their chosen field and the good work they do to their students.

“May your passion carry on well and beyond just today to change the country, the world for the better, one student at a time,” Garcia said.

The eight other teachers, including Borga and Alberio were also named Most Inspiring Teachers in their respective grade levels. The grade level winners were voted upon by the students through a survey conducted by the school’s Supreme Student Government.

    ANS Most Inspiring Teachers 2022
    ANS Most Inspiring Teachers 2022

The winners were picked based on various criteria, including a) the teacher goes out of his/her comfort zone to advance the students’ interest and provide a rich experience to all learners who were without ‘traditional teachers’ standing beside them in classrooms, b) the teacher applies creative, innovative, non-traditional methods to address the unique needs of the students during the pandemic, c) the teacher initiates open communication with the students and parents, d) the teacher is facilitative in addressing different concerns of the students, among others.

“The award was not about the teacher’s expertise on the subject matter, her delivery of the lesson during class, or how neat and expansive the lesson plan is. It was about the amount of care and diligence of the teacher to keep the students motivated to come to school every single day,” said General PTA President Dr. Nestor Ramirez.

For his part, Cebu City Councilor Rey Gealon, who graced the awarding ceremony, said he always felt inspired to be in the presence of inspiring teachers – teaching being the noblest of professions, as it is this profession that creates all the other professions.

“Until now, I’m still at awe in the presence of my grade school teachers, reminiscing moments of struggle in those quizzes, examinations, assignments, homeworks, and projects – sweet memories that never grow old,” Gealon said.

    Overall winner: Barry Dolloso
Grade level awardees: Nissy D. Borga, Ma. Karina Y. Estrada, Shaira Marie V. Reyes, Marijune I. Torreon, Gerlie N. Alberio, Joey Anne P. Binghay, Delia T. Canono, Maria Emelia S. Aragon,
