EdgePoint and Pahang State Parks Corporation Launch Connectivity for Conservation at the Al-Sultan Abdullah Royal Tiger Reserve, Ulu Tembeling, Jerantut, Pahang

EdgePoint Towers Sdn Bhd (“EdgePoint”) – part of EdgePoint Infrastructure, a leading ASEAN-based independent telecommunications infrastructure company – announced the successful deployment of its first-of-its-kind Connectivity for Conservation project at the Al-Sultan Abdullah Royal Tiger Reserve in Ulu Tembeling, Jerantut, Pahang. The project was implemented in partnership with the Pahang State Parks Corporation (Perbadanan Taman Negeri Pahang, PTNP), and The Habitat Foundation (THF).

By connecting manned guard posts and camp sites via Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite technology, the solution enables real-time coordination and communication for rangers and research staff operating in remote and dense rainforests. It also supports incident reporting, navigation and location tagging for emergency communication and response protocols.

Muniff Kamaruddin, Chief Executive Officer of EdgePoint Towers, said, “As part of our Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) commitment, we are proud to contribute to tiger conservation efforts through the use of technology. Protecting biodiversity is a crucial component of sustainable development, and by leveraging our expertise in connectivity and infrastructure, we aim to strengthen monitoring and protection of Malaysia’s endangered tigers. Through this partnership, we have worked closely with stakeholders to understand and address the complex challenges posed by difficult terrain, unpredictable weather, and wildlife-specific needs”.

“Operational constraints such as limited fuel supply and power access require robust solutions and detailed contingency planning to ensure optimal equipment performance with minimal on-site intervention. By integrating off-grid solar and battery systems, these installations will enhance the efficiency of rangers and researchers, providing reliable access to critical data in real time and enabling faster response to tiger sightings and anti-poaching efforts. This initiative also demonstrates how technology-driven insights can shape more effective, data-informed wildlife protection policies” he added.

Encik Zainal Abidin bin Othman, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of PTNP said, “The Malayan Tiger is listed as critically endangered, with an estimated 150 remaining in the wild in Malaysia. This alarming scarcity highlights the urgent need for innovative and technology-driven approaches to safeguard the species. Through the enhanced connectivity provided by EdgePoint’s solution, PTNP together with the service operator of Al-Sultan Abdullah Royal Tiger Reserve, Enggang Management Services (EMS) Sdn. Bhd. and implementing partners can now benefit with better communications in the deep forest, instead of depending on satellite phones only. This is also one of the risk mitigation plans for the park alongside patrolling and monitoring. Ultimately, this improves the safety for the patrollers while enhancing park management.

Justine Vaz, Executive Director from The Habitat Foundation added, “This pioneering initiative highlights the power of collaboration in driving meaningful conservation outcomes. It demonstrates the synergistic potential of partnerships between corporations, government agencies, and NGOs in addressing real-world challenges. The enhanced connectivity will improve coordination and data sharing among conservation stakeholders operating in remote landscapes. It will also be instrumental in reinforcing enforcement coordination and strengthening efforts to protect Malaysia’s endangered tigers. We look forward to seeing the results and insights from this program, which we hope will inform future policy decisions within the reserve and the wider conservation community. Through this partnership, we remain hopeful that we can contribute to the population recovery of this iconic Malaysian species”

The Connectivity for Tiger Conservation project marks a pioneering collaboration between technology and conservation, demonstrating how digital infrastructure and connectivity can be powerful in safeguarding Malaysia’s rich natural heritage, supporting biodiversity conservation and ensuring the survival of its critically endangered wildlife.

  • EdgePoint Launches Two More Digital Classrooms in East Malaysia under Its Connectivity for Communities Program

EdgePoint Infrastructure (“EdgePoint”), an ASEAN-based independent telecommunications infrastructure company, has announced two additional digital classrooms in East Malaysia under its regional corporate social responsibility (CSR) Connectivity for Communities (CFC). The first digital classroom is in Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kuala Abai in Kota Belud, Sabah and the second was launched by their local partners in Sarawak, Demanlink Connexion Sdn Bhd, in Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Simunjan No. 1.

Both initiatives share the objective of bringing connectivity to underserved areas, fostering digital inclusivity and bridging the digital gap, and brings the total number of digital classrooms established to four in Malaysia and fourteen across ASEAN.

At the launch of the digital classroom in Kota Belud, Muniff Kamaruddin, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of EdgePoint Towers, said, “The launch of the two new digital classrooms in Sabah and Sarawak is an extension of our focus to bridge the digital divide across underserved communities in East Malaysia. We have seen how students in other locations have benefited from connectivity and we are committed to creating more opportunities for education and growth by bringing digital access to those who need it most. The response to our CFC programs has been very encouraging, with surrounding communities also using access to the internet to improve their quality of lives. We are grateful for the continued support from all stakeholders who have worked together with us to equip teachers, students, and their families with the tools to achieve equitable digital literacy towards upward social mobility.

Present to launch the digital classroom in Simunjan, Sarawak were Demanlink Connexion Sdn. Bhd, and representatives from the Sarawak State Education Department and Simunjan District Education Office. Hanad Yusuf, CEO of Demanlink, said “Connectivity is more than just access to the internet for students in Sarawak, it is access to opportunity. Many rural areas in Sarawak still struggle with limited or no internet coverage, which continues to widen the digital divide and hinder access to education, economic participation, healthcare and other essential services. The Connectivity for Communities project is helping to close that gap by empowering children in rural communities here with the tools to thrive in a digital world. We launched the first digital classroom last year in Long Miri, and we have already seen real results where student attendance and exam scores have improved significantly, as they now have access to online learning platforms, more engaging teaching material and even options for self-improvement online.”

In the past year, EdgePoint launched two other schools in Malaysia located in Karak, Pahang and Miri, Sarawak. The CFC program includes ongoing digital literacy initiatives, delivered in partnership with local teachers and NGOs, to ensure students can maximise their learning and navigate the digital future confidently. To date, the program has impacted over 7,800 students in Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines with significant improvement in attendance and exam scores recorded among these students. Our in-house assessments have shown that students in Malaysia have recorded an 85% improvement in digital skills. EdgePoint aims to expand the program to a total of 23 schools by the end of 2025, reaffirming its commitment to supporting digital inclusion and literacy in underserved communities across ASEAN.

  • EdgePoint Towers advances renewable energy integration in telecommunications with first solar hybrid deployment

EdgePoint Towers Sdn Bhd (EdgePoint) – part of EdgePoint Infrastructure, a leading ASEAN-based independent telecommunications infrastructure company, has successfully launched its first solar hybrid site, marking a key milestone in its renewable energy initiatives. This deployment represents a significant step toward advancing sustainable energy solutions in Malaysia’s telecommunications sector.

The new solution provides up to 100% of the energy required to operate telecommunications equipment, reducing dependence on diesel fuel. With a 5.9-kilowatt peak (kWp) capacity, the site operates autonomously using photovoltaic (solar) energy, complemented by battery storage.

Muniff Kamaruddin, Chief Executive Officer of EdgePoint Towers, said, “We are proud to contribute to the deployment of renewable energy solutions that meet current and future needs for both sustainability and long-term cost efficiency. These solutions are especially important for remote and difficult-to-reach areas, such as transport corridors like highways, tunnels, bridges, or terminals, where quality coverage is essential for transient users. The opportunities to enhance national connectivity are vast, and EdgePoint is eager to continue working closely with our partners to advance sustainable solutions that improve coverage and reduce carbon emissions across the industry. This deployment is expected to reduce the site’s annual carbon emissions by approximately 78%, while also ensuring seamless connectivity for travelers along the highway.”

Muniff concluded, “Solar energy has proven to be an ideal solution for Malaysia, given its equatorial climate and high levels of solar insolation. By integrating solar power into telecommunications infrastructure, we are reducing reliance on non-renewable energy sources, lowering operational costs, and significantly decreasing emissions. Solar hybrid solutions are an adjacent focus area for us, it is a key part of our broader strategy of implementing innovative, sustainable solutions, driving an industry-wide transformation toward cleaner, more efficient operations and we are optimistic about future collaborations with both Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and non-MNO clients to help them meet their green objectives. As we expand our renewable energy initiatives, we aim to set new benchmarks for energy-efficient telecom infrastructure in Malaysia, helping our partners transition to greener operations without compromising connectivity, network quality, and reliability.”

By the end of 2025, EdgePoint plans to complete more full solar or solar hybrid sites across the country, further strengthening its commitment to sustainable telecom infrastructure.

EdgePoint Infrastructure is the fastest-growing multi-country tower company in ASEAN, with 15,800 sites in its portfolio out of which 1,800 sites are in Malaysia making it the second-largest tower company in Malaysia.
