NEC Announces New Industry-leading Multi-carrier Radio Solution to Address Higher Capacity Demands for 5G Networks

    – High transmission power at high modulation with the quality of the IAG/IAP series –
    – Industry’s highest-capacity outdoor module capable of supporting multiple channels –

NEC Corporation (TSE: 6701), a leading provider of wireless solutions, today announced the release of new iPASOLINK IAP3 series High-Power Outdoor Units (ODU) and a next generation Outdoor Branching (BR) Combiner (OBC2) to help answer the challenges operators face in increasing 5G network capacity and accelerating deployment needs.

NEC’s iPASOLINK ODUs are well-known and trusted for their reliability and market-leading performance by network operators that require high availability and high capacity operation over a wide range of challenging environmental conditions. The new IAP3 series ODU’s continue to deliver high quality, and now feature significantly improved RF performance in an energy efficient, compact, lightweight housing.

The new IAP3 delivers up to 5dB of transmission power improvement in the higher modulations, crucial to operators looking for high capacity links with high availability performance. The IAP3 supports the 6 to 23 GHz bands and channel widths up to 112 MHz with adaptive modulation (AMR) support up to 4096 QAM.

Automatic transmitter power control (ATPC) is enabled on the IAP3, ensuring efficient operation and that all standard radio configurations are supported, including Cross Polarization Interference Cancellation (XPIC) and Space Diversity operation. The IAP3 is also fully supported by the new N-on-1 hybrid coupler.

The N-on-1 hybrid coupler provides operators with a simple means to increase capacity and availability. It also offers improved flexibility, allowing operators to use either multiple channels in a single band or combine channels in different frequency bands. Moreover, inventory is also greatly reduced as the system uses the same IAP3 and IAG3 ODU’s as deployed in other parts of the network. Operators may start off with a single channel and easily upgrade in the future as spectrum becomes available, reusing and redeploying the same ODUs from other parts of the network. The N-on-1 hybrid is available in a compact, lightweight, direct mount package reducing demands on tower hardware.

NEC is also pleased to announce the release of the next generation Outdoor Branching Combiner (OBC2), offering flexible configurations up to 16 radio channels (8 channels in both polarizations) in ACAP, ACCP, CCDP and CCDP+ACCP configurations supporting capacities up to 10 Gbps. The new architecture simplifies field upgrades, and a simple cascading option allows support for Space Diversity.

The OBC2 size has been halved and weight reduced by up to 80%, reducing overall tower loading and aperture requirements. Moreover, the IP66 rated construction delivers reliable maintenance-free operation in the most severe outdoor environments. The OBC2 provides support for operation at higher modulations up to 4096 QAM and delivers superior RF performance, minimizing transmission power losses through reductions to insertion loss and signal distortion in the branching circuit.

“NEC continues to provide innovative products for our customers’ requirements. A key element for 5G is the bundling of bandwidth with configurations that feature high-power and flexible channel arrangement, which enables the use of faster transport. NEC’s high-power ODUs and the next generation Outdoor BR Combiner will help customers to expand the capabilities and flexibility of wireless solutions for 5G,” said Hideyuki Muto, Deputy General Manager, Wireless Solutions Division, NEC Corporation.

Both the IAP3 and OBC2 are part of NEC’s end-to-end high performance 5G network infrastructure solutions covering RAN, core network, optical and wireless transport, Orchestration / Marketplace (BSS) and a wide array of network infrastructure services.

  • NEC launches Optical Fiber Sensing Solution using AI

NEC launches Optical Fiber Sensing Solution using AI

    – Contributes to infrastructure maintenance by analyzing vibrations detected on existing optical fiber –

NEC Corporation (TSE: 6701) announced today that it has begun sales of the “NEC Intelligent Optical Fiber Sensing Solution,” a solution that allows Communications Service Providers (CSP) and optical fiber owners from around the world to utilize optical fiber as a sensor.

This solution contributes to infrastructure maintenance by using AI to analyze vibrations detected with optical fibers, thereby enabling the detection of abnormalities, such as fiber damage, and helping to prevent future damages.

This solution utilizes NEC’s optical fiber sensing technology, which is one of the first technologies of its kind, to enable sensing from existing optical fibers that are conventionally used for communications.

In addition to a sensing device attached to one end of the optical fiber, this solution consists of software with a function that detects vibrations and external conditions that may cause an abnormality, and a mapping function that accurately displays location information, such as the latitude and longitude of a fiber section.

In recent years, with the spread of high-speed, high-capacity communications for 5G, the importance of optical fiber has increased, and more fiber is continually being installed. As a result, there is a growing impact from communications failures caused by damaged fibers. CSP and optical fiber owners need a system to support the efficient maintenance and management of fiber. In addition, as optical fiber installations increase, it is increasingly difficult for CSP and optical fiber owners to quickly identify damaged areas in the event of fiber breakage, making it challenging for operators and maintenance personnel to quickly make repairs.

This solution, however, detects signs of potential fiber cable damage caused by unexpected construction work, deterioration, etc., by detecting vibrations that differ from normal conditions, and also enables quick identification and repair of damaged areas by precise mapping of fiber location information.

NEC has already examined the possibility of using optical fiber sensing technology to detect cracks in utility poles. Moreover, NEC and Verizon have conducted joint field experiments of a traffic monitoring system in the United States, where the companies confirmed the effectiveness of a traffic monitoring solution* for assessing roadway traffic conditions. This is in addition to the companies also verifying the effectiveness of the new NEC Intelligent Optical Fiber Sensing Solution in the field.

“Optical fiber cable networks are becoming increasingly important as 5G becomes more prevalent. We have been working for many years on the practical application of fiber sensing utilizing optical fiber networks, and are excited to capitalize on this technology in order to improve the efficiency of network operations,” said, Kazuhiro Tagawa, General Manager, 1st Network Service Division, NEC Corporation.

In the future, NEC will expand the application of this solution and aims to create new value across a variety of fields, such as utilizing information acquired through wide-area monitoring with existing fibers to enhance the services of smart cities.

    Solution Features
Fiber Cable Cut Prevention – Prevents fiber damage by detecting abnormal vibrations
By analyzing vibrations detected by the fiber, it is possible to automatically detect vibration sources, such as construction machinery, that may cut the fiber. This helps to prevent accidental fiber damage by identifying unusual vibrations caused by construction, etc.
Fiber Cable Position Locator – Accurate mapping of fiber locations allows for quick identification and repair of damages

The exact location of a fiber section can be conveniently mapped, allowing users to quickly identify damaged areas in the event of a failure. This helps when an abnormality is detected by sending an alert to an operator in real time, thereby supporting efficient repair work through accurate instructions from operators to maintenance personnel.

  • Rakuten Mobile, NEC and Intel demonstrate industry-leading performance in containerized 5G Core lab trial

Rakuten Mobile, NEC and Intel demonstrate industry-leading performance in containerized 5G Core lab trial

Rakuten Mobile, Inc., NEC Corporation and Intel Corporation announced today that they have achieved a performance of 640 Gbps per server for the containerized User Plane Function (UPF) on the containerized 5G SA core network jointly developed by Rakuten Mobile and NEC running on the Rakuten Communications Platform (RCP).

Containerized UPF performance is crucial to maximize the value of 5G deployment. This is because the control plane (C-plane) and user plane (U-plane), which were historically collocated, are completely decoupled in the disaggregated 5G architecture. This enables an independently scalable UPF which is key to private networks, edge computing, hybrid cloud and to accelerate a variety of deployment scenarios. Rakuten Mobile has adopted 5G architecture from the launch of its network, including a CUPS (Control and User Plane Separated) packet core for its 4G LTE network.

The 640 Gbps performance per server for the containerized UPF on the 5G SA core network was achieved in a laboratory environment in Tokyo. This represents a significant opportunity to drive high performance of the commercial network in the future.

NEC leveraged its industry-leading product development based on its advanced telecom and IT expertise to maximize CPU utilization and fast memory access. This is fueled by the utilization of Intel’s latest high-performance infrastructure, including 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors with built-in AI acceleration and Dual-port 100Gb Intel Ethernet Network Adapter E810-2CQDA2 with Dynamic Device Personalization (DDP). Rakuten Mobile, Intel and NEC have collaborated on high-speed processing of containerized UPF, which plays a significant role in this initiative, and achieved a performance of 640 Gbps per server. NEC and Kagome contribute to the sustainability of farming through enhancing the CropScope agricultural ICT platform

NEC Corporation (TSE: 6701) today announced the enhancement of CropScope, its agricultural ICT platform, which NEC has been operating jointly with Kagome Co, Ltd. since April 2020. New functions to improve farming have been added to the strengthened platform, and stable yields have already been achieved through verification in a variety of environments. As a result, NEC expects to expand the number of new contracts for the platform, and to contribute to the achievement of more sustainable farming by resolving challenging farming issues.

CropScope consists of a service that uses sensors and satellite photographs to visualize the growth status of tomatoes and the condition of soils, as well as a service that provides farming advice using artificial intelligence (AI). The AI capitalizes on a wealth of know-how from experienced cultivators, enabling it to provide guidance on the optimum amount of water, fertilizer and the best time to apply them. This platform enables tomato producers, regardless of skill level, to stabilize their harvests and reduce cultivation costs, while implementing environmentally friendly farming.

In addition, the platform’s accumulation of farming knowledge from experienced workers enables know-how to be passed down, and successful farming production from experienced cultivators to be duplicated, thereby expanding the areas of production and providing support for the training of new farmers. Moreover, the operators and managers of processed tomato facilities can comprehensively understand the growth of tomatoes in both their own soils and the soils of contracted farmers, making it possible to optimize harvesting and improve productivity based on objective data.

Key enhancements to CropScope are as follows:

    1. Strengthening the versatility of AI farming advice services
In 2020, NEC and Kagome conducted demonstration tests of CropScope in collaboration with an Australia-based Kagome subsidiary, KAGOME Australia Pty Ltd. Since the cultivation requirements for Australia differed from markets where CropScope had been applied in the past, such as Portugal, the platform gained important knowledge on soils, crop breeds, and irrigation facilities, including simulations on the water content of soils in the underlying irrigation system, recording data from trained cultivators and enhancing analytical methods. This has enabled the platform to deliver the same harvest capacity as trained cultivators in a variety of environments, ranging from the Northern Hemisphere to the Southern Hemisphere.

    2. Improve the convenience of applications based on user feedback
Based on the feedback of large-scale users of CropScope worldwide, NEC has improved the usability of applications by including the ability to identify field abnormalities, such as changes in the soil and water content, the ability to determine farming priorities for individual fields, expressing data in a simple manner, and the ability to analyze accumulated data between fields in order to improve farming methods.

Going forward, the two companies aim to accelerate the growth of this business by strengthening proposals for processed tomato manufacturers, particularly in Europe and the Americas, and for tomato production companies.

“We aim to realize environmentally friendly and highly profitable farming in the cultivation of tomatoes for processing globally. Since 2020, we have been expanding the AI farming support tool CropScope, which we jointly developed using NEC’s cutting-edge technologies. This tool was renewed in April 2021 to strengthen our ability to provide solutions. In addition, we will accelerate the resolution of the issues that producers face in the farming field, and aim to realize sustainable farming,” said Kengo Nakata, General Manager, Smart Agri Division, Kagome.

“In its strategic partnership with Kagome, NEC has been expanding digitization in the tomato market. At the same time, NEC has responded to the challenges faced by its production sites by enhancing the versatility of farming advice utilizing AI, which is NEC’s specialty, and strengthening its ‘CropScope’ platform. NEC will continue to develop and provide solutions that contribute to the cultivation of a wide range of crops, helping to overcome social issues, climate change and food safety concerns, while creating sustainable farming experiences,” said Teruyuki Nakajima, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Corporate Business Development Division, NEC Corporation.
